This human life stage is marked by new experiences where the young person explores his/her individual identity, relatedness to others and undergoes physical, psychological and sociological development. Adolescents require physical and emotional safety to navigate this often difficult period in their lives. The mental health of the young person may be impacted by pressures such as exams, body image, bullying, relationships and bereavement to name but a few.
Counselling, can offer a young person support while they work through such difficulties in an non-judgemental environment to reach a new understanding and personal empowerment. Seeking help at an early stage can prevent such difficulties becoming overwhelming and a source of anxiety and depression. My way of working with young people often requires involvement of parents or guardians in separate sessions or joint sessions with the young person if this deemed helpful and with the young person’s agreement.
